Stone, set by hand.
Long Stride Stone Masonry builds dry stack walls, retaining walls, stairs and letterboxes across Canberra, Queanbeyan and surrounding ACT. Paul Da Quinta — trained in Portugal, operating out of the Molonglo Valley.
The craft
Traditional methods, Canberra stone.
Masonry is one of the oldest ways of building. Stone masonry is an art, and it takes decades to master. Paul was apprenticed to master masons in Portugal’s Algarve — from the quarry to the dressed stone in its final rest, bearing load and pleasing the eye.
Machinery has changed the quarry. Installation is still done by hand. Long Stride honours those skills, then looks for better ways to build for this climate — freeze, thaw, and the ACT’s hard light.
